Y GOG
WHAT IS Y GOG?
Y Gog is an abbreviation of ‘Gogledd’ or ‘ North’ in Welsh and is a colloquialism frequently used to describe North Wales and its people i.e. ‘ Y Gogs’. This anthology or ‘blodeuwerdd’ is a collective, creative exploration of personal and individual responses to the theme of North Wales.
The theme was primarily described as “ a surreal exploration of the unseen North”, however, the theme is flexible within the context to encompass responses to landscapes, seascapes, mythology and legend, ghosts, historical relics and scars of industrialization which characterize the land. It may also evoke personal memory or collective recollection.
From an old celtic monastery to the ‘beat of dead men’s boots in a quarry woodland’. Lakes which ‘gulp a whole landscape’ and skies ‘starred with crows’. A ghostly presence on Bangor pier and a poetic recollection of seaweed, honeysuckle and chocolate. Ynys mon sea scapes which mourn a lost child ‘born between two seas’. ‘ Y Gog’ provides a kaleidoscope of imagery and emotion inspired by the natural landscape of North Wales.
